Rock & Roll RIPs: Dusty Hill, Joey Jordison, Mike Howe, Gary Corbett, and Jeff LaBar.

Boy do we have some amazing numerology to look at. In July 2021, a handful of artist from the world of rock and roll got their “retirement packages” and died. On July 14, we had both the lead guitarist Jeff LaBar and the touring keyboardist Gary Corbett of the glam metal band Cinderella die on the same freakin’ day. Plus, Gary Corbett died the day before his birthday. Then on July 26, we had the deaths of Mike Howe and Joey Jordison. Mike Howe was an American heavy metal singer who performed with Metal Church, Heretic, and Snair. Nathan Jonas “Joey” Jordison was an American musician and songwriter, best known as the drummer, co-songwriter and one of the founding members of the metal band Slipknot as well as guitarist for horror punk band Murderdolls. Finally on July 28, American rock band ZZ Top‘s bassist Dusty Hill died. If your keeping score at home then you can see we have enough members for a whole band.

Slipknot’s All Hope Is Gone is the final studio album released by the band to feature their full original lineup with two longtime members: bassist and founding member (#2) Paul Gray, who was found dead in an Iowa hotel on May 24, 2010, almost two years after the release of All Hope Is Gone, and drummer (#1) Joey Jordison, who was fired from the group in December 2013. The members of Slipknot use numbers to identify themselves, not names, and the second song on All Hope Is Gone is titled “Gematria (The Killing Name)”. Gematria is the practice of assigning a numerical value to a letter of the alphabet. Gematria and date calculation is what we love to look at on this blog, so let’s have a go at it.

In a previous Slipknot investigation we mentioned that Nathan Jonas “Joey” Jordison =282 was 12,812 days old when his bandmate Paul Gray died and All Hope Is Gone =828 released on 8/20/08. Charles Manson’s death: Surfing sacrifices, The Vietnam War & “Charlies”.

Charles Milles Manson born Charles Milles Maddox has been reported to have died on November 19, 2017. His death due to natural causes coming only 7 days after his birthday and less than a month after co founder of Marilyn Manson & the Spook Kids, Daisy Berkowitz died. Daisy Berkowitz’s death I covered (here). Before getting famous for the Tate murders, Charles Manson was a singer-songwriter on the fringe of the Los Angeles music industry, chiefly through a chance association with Dennis Wilson, drummer and founding member of the Beach Boys. Charles and Dennis with beards I gotta say make them look very similar as seen above. According to his wiki page Dennis was the only true surfer in the Beach Boys, and his personal life exemplified the “California Myth” that the band’s early songs often celebrated. Connecting Charles Manson throughout this “surf” and “Charlie” themed decode is the 1979 film Apocalypse Now and the Vietnam War. Uncredited as an extra in Apocalypse Now is Charlie Sheen.

I’ve never seen Apocalypse Now but the wiki page says in 2000, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.
